Chris Fordwoh sets love in the context of power, or vice versa, in a series of constructions which confuse and conflate ideas around the global, the personal, the façade and the domestic.

The Test Space area is a large corridor situated within the Spike Island building. Fordwoh investigates the idea of the corridor as a conduit and a promise. Representations of the spouses of the world’s most powerful men and women lie behind doorways set into cardboard box constructions. The cardboard boxes reference production and impersonal commerce but, with their dollhouse entrances, may equally recall an idealistic child-like game of playing house.

The love marriage is a relatively modern concept replacing the idea of marriage, in the west, as a decision largely concerned with economics and status. With his amalgamation of the intimate and the high-profile Fordwoh questions whether love really conquers all or whether the love relationship is exploited by and subsumed into the machinations of power.

Any risk of cynicism, however, is denied by Fordwoh’s humour and playful optimism. Fordwoh says: ‘Artists are the capricious lovers of power. We tunnel our way into its corridors and change the wallpaper.’

Pip Seymour will be hosting a free event day at the Bristol Folk House in connection with Bristol Fine Art.

It will be a drop-in free paint event and people are welcome to pop in as they please or stay for the full day.

Join us in the Bristol Folk House Hall for a day of demonstrations and a chance to meet the makers of this wonderful paint.

Pip and his partner Rebecca will be talking throughout the day about:

Longing for some different kind of sound, waiting for a particular voice to make themselves heard again, in the meantime, I'm taking the best of what I got and going to listen to some jazz...

Jazz pick of the week: April 13 - 19

Have you checked out the fortnightly jazz sessions at Canteen yet (Monday 13)? With jam session veteran Craig Crofton keeping a firm hand on the tiller it’s been attracting some fine musicians of late. Things continue to be classy at the Fringe session in The Mall (Wednesday 15) where the visit of Andy Sheppard and Percy Pursglove’s quartet is sure to fill the room. With Dan Moore (keys) and Tony Orrell (drums), it’s a kind of Super-Pushy Doctors that promises great fun. If you’re still not sure how to pronounce BEJE then catch the former Bristol European Jazz Ensemble’s global jazz infusion at Future Inn (Thursday 16), the same evening as Brass Junkies (above) appear at The Old Duke and James Morton’s Groove Den welcomes this week’s guest at the Gallimaufry.

Olushola Ajose, better known by his stage name Afrikan Boy (born 28 March 1989) is a grime MC from Woolwich, London, England, originally from Nigeria. He made a guest appearance on the track "Hussel" from the M.I.A. album Kala, and is one of the initial artists M.I.A. wanted signed to her label in 2007, then titled Zig-Zag.A remix of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" was uploaded onto her MySpace featuring Afrikan Boy and fellow tour mate Rye Rye. Afrikan Boy has never appeared on pirate radio,a performance opportunity common in the grime genre. He is currently studying for a Psychology degree at Brunel University.

Touring in support of M.I.A. on her 2007 KALA Tour and 2008 People Vs. Money Tour as well as headlining his own shows, Afrikan Boy has appeared at the Splash! festival. On 26 June 2011, Afrikan Boy finally released his mixtape named "What Took You So Long" on his website for free.

Legendary African musician Fela Kuti’s youngest son “has handled his father’s esteemed Afrobeat legacy with aplomb” (The Guardian), heading up his old band, Egypt 80, over the course of three albums. The latest, A Long Way to the Beginning, finds Seun “turning in a high-energy, danceable Afrobeat/jazz/funk fusion” (Pop Matters). “These tracks are for dancing,” says NPR. “If you’re not moving, something may well be wrong.”

André Mba Obame, figure de l'opposition gabonaise et fondateur de l’Union nationale, est décédé ce dimanche 12 avril à Yaoundé, au Cameroun.

André Mba Obame est décédé à la mi-journée à Yaoundé au Cameroun. Il s'y trouvait pour des soins et devait s'envoler en Afrique du Sud où il comptait poursuivre son traitement, a indiqué son neveu François Ondo Edou, secrétaire exécutif adjoint de l'Union nationale. Après avoir passé une nuit agitée, André Mba Obama a été conduit à l'hôpital où il est décédé.

« Tout le monde sait que Monsieur André Mba Obame est malade depuis les élections de 2009 qu’il a gagnées. Il était en Afrique du Sud où il s’est fait opérer et après, il est parti en France et revenu ici. Ça n’allait toujours pas. Et c’est comme ça qu’il est parti à l’étranger pour se soigner », précise François Ondo Edou.

André Mba Obame était arrivé en troisième position à la présidentielle de 2009 remportée par Ali Bongo, selon les résultats officiels proclamés par la Cour constitutionnelle. Mais il avait revendiqué la victoire et s'était proclamé lui-même président élu.

Des heurts à Libreville

L'annonce de son décès a déclenché la colère de ses partisans à Libreville, au Gabon. Des voitures et des bâtiments ont été incendiés, notamment l'ambassade du Bénin, selon des sources concordantes citées par l'AFP.

Le porte-parole de la présidence gabonaise, Alain Claude Bilié Bi Nze, confirme ces incidents et met en cause les responsables de l'Union nationale. « S'en prendre aux ambassades c'est violer le principe de l'inviolabilité des ambassades, déplore-t-il. Il y a eu des dégats matériels, la police a été immédiatement alertée pour sécuriser les lieux. Il y a encore des déploiements de petits groupes de militants chargés de cailloux, d'armes blanches, affirme-t-il.Ce sont des actes que la présidence condamne avec la plus grande fermeté, indique le porte-parole. D'autant plus que M. Mba Obame est décédé d'une maladie, comme l'a reconnu le porte-parole de son parti dans un communiqué. »

« Nous déplorons son décès », assure le porte-parole de la présidence gabonaise, Alain Claude Bilié Bi Nze, qui rappelle qu'il avait lui-même travaillé avec André Mba Obame au sein du gouvernement. « Nous déplorons son décès et nous déplorons surtout la tentative d'instrumentalisation de son décès, répète-t-il. M. Mba Obame n'aurait certainement pas appelé à cela. Lorsqu'en 2009, il a contesté l'élection présidentielle, c'est par une grève de la faim et pas par des violences, donc ceux qui se réclament de lui feraient mieux de réfléchir à cela. Lui-même n'aurait pas appelé à la violence. »

De leur côté, les responsables de l'Union nationale démentent que des partisans de leur parti soient à l'origine des violences. « Nous n'avons aucun rapport avec ces violences »,déclarent en substance les responsables de l'Union nationale qui disent d'ailleurs avoir très peu d'information sur les faits. « Pour ce qu'on dit de violences et autres, je fais très attention à ce qui peut être avancé comme information, affirme le secrétaire exécutif de l'Union nationale Paul Marie Ngonju.Souvent, pour aller jeter la [responsabilité] sur l'autre, on va créer une situation et on va accuser l'autre d'avoir commis telle ou telle exaction. »

Réactions :

« Nous allons continuer la lutte »

L'ancien président de la Commission de l'Union africaine, Jean Ping, également membre de l'opposition gabonaise, pleure un proche qui a joué un rôle crucial pour la démocratie du pays : « Le Gabon vient de perdre l'un de ses illustres fils, combattant de la démocratie, de la liberté et des droits de l'homme, déplore Jean Ping. André Mba Obame (...) vient de nous quitter. Vous savez, André Mba Obame était encore jeune. Il a travaillé ici, il a été membre du gouvernement, il a été à plusieurs reprises dans le cabinet d'Omar Bongo, dans son gouvernement. Aujourd'hui, pour avoir osé briguer la magistrature suprême et gagner l'élection, il subit les foudres de ceux qui ont décidé de confisquer ainsi le pouvoir au Gabon. C'était un homme très convivial, très gentil et aussi un homme déterminé. »

Mais pour l'ancien président de la Commission de l'Union africaine, le combat doit continuer : « Ses bourreaux, tapis dans l'ombre, ont réussi la mission qu'ils ont confiée à leurs sbires, explique-t-il. La question que se posent désormais les Gabonais c'est : "qui sera le suivant ?" La population a commencé à manifester dans les rues. Je pense qu'André Mba Obame nous quitte trop tôt. Il s'en va au moment où nous avions besoin de lui et nous ne pouvons que le regretter. Mais je crois que le combat qu'il a mené n'est pas vain et nous allons continuer la lutte. Nous allons prendre ensemble l'engagement solennel d'accompagner le peuple gabonais dans son désir de libération. Les différents états-majors de l'opposition, notamment du parti qui était son parti, nous allons faire une série de communications et nous allons voir ce qu'il y a lieu de faire à la suite de sa disparition. »

Très ému, l'opposant Jean Eyéghé Ndong, qui a participé au rassemblement au siège du parti l'Union nationale dimanche après midi, promet une grande mobilisation de l'opposition dans les prochains jours. « C'est une valeur que nous perdons sur le plan politique et nous savons que André Mba Obame avait beaucoup lutté pour la démocratie au Gabon. Il n'y a pas réussi entièrement mais nous allons prolonger son combat. »

RCA: Samba-Panza interpellée sur des nominations au comité technique

En République centrafricaine, la préparation du Forum de réconciliation continue de faire polémique au sein de la classe politique. Un collectif de petits partis politiques a publié vendredi 10 avril une lettre ouverte à la présidente de la transition, Catherine Samba-Panza, appelant à revenir sur certaines nominations au sein du comité technique. De son côté, l'Alliance des forces démocratiques pour la transition (AFDT), qui regroupe deux des principaux partis du pays, a rencontré vendredi également la présidente de transition pour lui faire part de ses préoccupations. Ce week-end, l'AFDT se dit rassurée.

Les premières plaintes contre les conditions d'organisation du Forum sont venues d'un collectif de petits partis politiques. Parmi eux, le Parti de l'unité nationale (PUN) et le Forum démocratique pour la modernité (Fodem). Dans une lettre à la présidente de transition, ils ont exprimé leurs craintes concernant la nomination des membres du comité technique, dont Jean-Michel Demafouth a été désigné chef.

Victorien Yama est le vice-président du PUN. Selon lui, « une grande majorité de la classe politique centrafricaine n’est pas d’accord avec le choix de M. Demafouth comme coordinateur général du comité technique d’organisation du Forum. Et nous n’avons pas non plus apprécié le choix du gestionnaire qui se retrouve à gérer les fonds destinés à l’organisation de ce Forum. Ces deux personnes posent problème et nous aimerions que leurs choix soient revus. »

Inquiétudes

De son côté, l'Alliance des forces démocratiques pour la transition (AFDT) a également fait part de ses inquiétudes concernant la sous-représentation des partis politiques et de la société civile dans le comité technique d'organisation du Forum. Cette Alliance regroupe sept partis politiques centrafricains, dont deux des principaux partis du pays, le Mouvement de libération du peuple centrafricain (MLP) et le Rassemblement démocratique centrafricain (RDC).

Joachim Rainaldy Sioké, président de l'AFDT, explique que quatre membres de l'Alliance ont rencontré la présidente pour trouver un compromis : « En ce qui concerne le comité technique, il n’y avait pratiquement pas de membres de partis politiques. Deuxièmement, elle a pris ce décret sans aucune consultation des forces vives de la Nation. Elle nous a indiqué que le processus risquait de prendre trop de retard. Nous avons pris acte des arguments. »

La présidente de transition a donc demandé à l'AFDT de désigner un délégué par plateforme politique. Ces délégués devraient être intégrés aux commissions techniques du comité d'organisation. Le Forum pour la réconciliation doit se tenir à Bangui fin avril, en présence de toutes les parties au conflit qui touche la Centrafrique depuis la chute de l'ancien président, François Bozizé, en mars 2013.

This month, Arnolfini’s level 1 galleries will become a temporary home to Residence, a collective of Bristol based artists who make performance and live art.

United by a curiosity towards each other’s practices and a commitment to supporting each other, they share resources, space and knowledge.

Residence have recently moved out of The Milk Bar, where they were housed for the past six years under Bristol City Council's Capacity scheme. They are now looking for a new space to call home. 

Current Residence artists are: Action Hero, Astrid Breel, Alice Human, Bella Fortune, Ed Rapley, Ella Good & Nicki Kent, Folake Shoga, Ophelia Bitz, Jasmine Loveys, Jo Bannon, Sara Zaltash, Sylvia Rimat, Ria Hartley, Tom Marshman, Zoe Heron.

From 13 to 15 April and 20 April to 4 May Residence will be using galleries 2,3 and 4 as rehearsal, meeting and event space.
