Bristol today's sound

Bristol is a lot about music for me. So first thing, I'm checking concerts for the rest of the week.

Longing for some different kind of sound, waiting for a particular voice to make themselves heard again, in the meantime, I'm taking the best of what I got and going to listen to some jazz...

Just sharing.

Jazz pick of the week: April 13 - 19

Have you checked out the fortnightly jazz sessions at Canteen yet (Monday 13)? With jam session veteran Craig Crofton keeping a firm hand on the tiller it’s been attracting some fine musicians of late. Things continue to be classy at the Fringe session in The Mall (Wednesday 15) where the visit of Andy Sheppard and Percy Pursglove’s quartet is sure to fill the room. With Dan Moore (keys) and Tony Orrell (drums), it’s a kind of Super-Pushy Doctors that promises great fun. If you’re still not sure how to pronounce BEJE then catch the former Bristol European Jazz Ensemble’s global jazz infusion at Future Inn (Thursday 16), the same evening as Brass Junkies (above) appear at The Old Duke and James Morton’s Groove Den welcomes this week’s guest at the Gallimaufry.

That said, we know that for a lot of people Record Store Day is one of the highlights of the year, mainly due to the events put on and indeed limited edition releases from high profile bands, so here are some RSD15 release highlights for you. Enjoy the day (there’s live music on in both Rise and Head), and support your local record store/record label/music venue/band/busker/music mag throughout the year, yeah?!

Come down for another slice of the annual RSD extravaganza! Records galore and a day of fun. We'll have a specially curated bill as usual and plenty of team Rise on hand to help you get everything you want. Rise will be open from 8am, and Friska will be open at 6am to keep you all warm and feed / caffeinated!

As usual it's a one copy of each title rule, alongside the normal queue numbering system. We'll give you a number that reflects your queue position, then call you up in small groups. We'll have a few lists you can tick like last year too.

Olushola Ajose, better known by his stage name Afrikan Boy (born 28 March 1989) is a grime MC from Woolwich, London, England, originally from Nigeria. He made a guest appearance on the track "Hussel" from the M.I.A. album Kala, and is one of the initial artists M.I.A. wanted signed to her label in 2007, then titled Zig-Zag.A remix of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" was uploaded onto her MySpace featuring Afrikan Boy and fellow tour mate Rye Rye. Afrikan Boy has never appeared on pirate radio,a performance opportunity common in the grime genre. He is currently studying for a Psychology degree at Brunel University.

Touring in support of M.I.A. on her 2007 KALA Tour and 2008 People Vs. Money Tour as well as headlining his own shows, Afrikan Boy has appeared at the Splash! festival. On 26 June 2011, Afrikan Boy finally released his mixtape named "What Took You So Long" on his website for free.

Seun Kuti

Legendary African musician Fela Kuti’s youngest son “has handled his father’s esteemed Afrobeat legacy with aplomb” (The Guardian), heading up his old band, Egypt 80, over the course of three albums. The latest, A Long Way to the Beginning, finds Seun “turning in a high-energy, danceable Afrobeat/jazz/funk fusion” (Pop Matters). “These tracks are for dancing,” says NPR. “If you’re not moving, something may well be wrong.”
