In the mind of an artist

Working in cinema now, I interact and read about a different breed of artists...

One question that has always interested me is the psyche of the artist, and here is a field to explore the issue a little further.

The most common reaction when I tell non artists that I'm passionate about art and artists is "forget about them, they're only narcissists".

Well. I'm never an easy taker of generalisation, but there is a link between being creative and being profoundly self-centered, according to most experts and scientists.

Now, is it that simple? I'm not sure. Some of my best friends are highly creative and very empathic. I believe that creativity, imagination and a forward-thinking mind can bring you closer to general understanding and openness to others.

To be honest, I feel it depends more on how much sensitive people have been hurt... If you're feeling safe and protected, you don't use narcissism as a defense mechanism... If your wounds are to deep or unhealed, wearing a mask may be the only solution to survive the competitiveness of the art world.

Just make sure you don't end up lonely in an ivory tower.

-

You can read more on the issue here:

Major Artists Are Also Major Narcissists, Says Science

A new paper argues that artists with big signatures are more successful.
-

And more importantly here:

Why the Art World’s Raging Narcissism Epidemic Is Killing Art

Let's stop treating art as mindless entertainment and demand more from artists.
Narcissism is everywhere. News anchors say it prevents politicians from keeping their pants on. Teachers and coaches reinforce it by avoiding grades and giving out trophies that read “Participant.” Adults and kids push it on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, while achievement-free celebrities turn it into worldwide exposure and profitable endorsements. Of course, it was only a matter of time until this blustery but debilitating epidemic struck an already self-absorbed art world.
And strike deep it has! Because artists in our time are defined simply as people who make art, they and those who covet their wares are especially susceptible to the narcissism bug. Take, for a start, American sociologist Howard Becker’s modern-day definition of an artist: “If you do it [art], you must be an artist; conversely, if you are an artist, what you do must be art.” That précis, of course, contains it’s own vain syllogism; some would say it’s downright self-aggrandizing. Consequently, just like Donald Trump—the one presidential candidate psychiatrists are willing to go out on limb to label clinically conceited—many artists today resemble textbook cases of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).
According to the American Medical Association, narcissistic personality disorder is defined as “a condition in which a person is excessively preoccupied with personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity, and mentally unable to see the destructive damage they are causing to themselves and others.” Consider, in this light, the late Chris Burden’s self mutilations, which included shooting himself in the arm and crucifying himself onto the hood of a car; Marina Abramovic’s recent entreaties to innocent bystanders in New York and London to queue for hours to share her “charismatic space”; and Shia LeBeouf’s latest grasp for undivided attention, #AllMyMovies, which consisted of a movie marathon complete with bizarro fans, rubbernecking press, and a half-asleep star munching on popcorn in one of the front rows. These and other fresh demonstrations of over-the-top egotism constitute a pandemic of art world narcissism that could, if left unchecked, turn into a serious mental health emergency.

As I was saying to a colleague yesterday, I hate when reality comes and reinforces a cliché.

Prove me wrong, my friend, prove me wrong.

'Blood Monster', powerful political track out on March 15

About nine months ago, I wrote about this coming song here!
https://melissa-on-the-road.blogspot.fr/2017/06/blood-monster-bristols-song-for-stop.html

The track features musicians from This Is The Kit, Portishead, Radiohead and Massive Attack, and was produced independently in Bristol U.K.

Here it is now.

Strong message! Great collaboration.

Available here for £1: https://goodrich1.bandcamp.com

Goodrich - 'Blood Monster'

The video for 'BLOOD MONSTER' was written and directed by Goodrich and Bristol filmmaker Albion Maynard.

Filmed in and around Bristol, it features Julian Landau, lead singer of local legends Zen Hussies, as a suit-wearing, briefcase-brandishing 'man in black', travelling door to door through suburbia, hypnotising ordinary people into a frenzy of hatred, division, and violence.

The film plays out as a nightmare, with the action serving as a metaphor for state and corporate coercion, be it the rise of right-wing conservatism, warmongering, populism, fascism, etc.

-

Produced by Bristol singer-songwriter Jimmy Goodrich, 'BLOOD MONSTER' is a special project in aid of STOP TRUMP COALITION.

All profits go to stoptrumpuk.org

Help them to organise the largest demonstration in British history ahead of Donald Trump’s visit to the U.K. in 2018!

You can yuy the track from March 15 at: goodrich1.bandcamp.com

THE LYRICS

Blood monster
Murder-man
Drag your blade
Across the land

Blood monster
Where are you going?
Your eyes are red
Your fangs are showing

Blood monster
Oh Bringer of fire
All the bloodshed in this world
Can never slake your dark desire

Now every trace of love
Has disappeared
Erased by hate
Replaced by fear
And the blood monster
Draws ever near
To drown the world in fire and tears

Warmonger
You beat the drums
And place your bets on either side
Blood monster
you feed on the young
you set their anger running wild

Your hunger for oil and gold
Is never sated or satisfied
Your heart's grown old and cold
And yet you don't lay down and die

Now every trace of love
Has disappeared
Erased by hate
Replaced by fear
And the blood monster draws ever near
To bathe the world in fire and tears

"The Saddest Bear Of All"

Today, a special, a tiny bit different, type of choice.

A short story for children. The children in us.

The Saddest Bear Of All

"I wrote this story in 2008 for my niece," said David Guy, "who used to carry round and hug a big sad looking teddy bear at the time. (She was about 1 and a half then, and is now nearly ten.)
It was the first children’s book I wrote, and I was lucky enough to have it illustrated by my friend minkee, who made it much more beautiful than it ever really had any right to be."

The Saddest Bear Of All is currently available to buy on iTunes. I’m all out of print versions at the moment, though, unfortunately.

'Remember to look up at the stars': the best Stephen Hawking quotes

The British physicist and author had a way with words. Here are a collection of some of his greatest quotations

Here are a collection of some of his greatest quotes...

CHOICE:

  •  “For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk and we learned to listen. Speech has allowed the communication of ideas, enabling human beings to work together to build the impossible. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. With the technology at our disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking.”

-

"One of the basic rules of the universe is that nothing is perfect. Perfection simply doesn't exist... Without imperfection, neither you nor I would exist".

-

  • “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.”

-

  • “We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.”

-

"However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.”

-

  • “Life would be tragic if it weren’t funny”.

Thank you. So long.

Stephen Hawking's big ideas... made simple | Guardian Animations

No time to read Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time? In just two and a half minutes, Alok Jha explains why black holes are doomed to shrink into nothingness then explode with the energy of a million nuclear bombs, and rewinds to the big bang and the origin of the universe?

50 shades of silence

In this world of noises, television, high-speed tunnel visual, multimedia platforms, social media and personal screaming, one could think silence is a bliss and a blessing.

And it is.

But is is not a easy task for a voice, a writer, a communicator to learn to master silence.

Silence was, during my childhood, synonymous of lack of communication. Lack of bounding, self-expression and discussion. Synonymous of lack. Of something missing.

But noise can sometimes be so much harmful.

I'm learning a lot of lessons. And silence is indeed a blessing. Only in the silence can we feel the sound of belonging. Silence the mind, and listen to the eternity calling.

Silence has a deep spiritual value that i had to conquest and master before I even begin to fathom its depth.

Silence is the space between keynotes that makes the music come alive...

Silence also tried to teach me the meaning and blessing of patience.

So many years of running, doing, trying, talking, writing. Ten years ago I left Paris for Miami, reported on the McCain / Obama campaign, travelled to Haiti and wrote about the Cuban American communities... I did too much, too quickly and only fed the monster that was my fear of the void and the silence... Losing everything that I thought I had, friends, love, family.

Just like in this song:

P J Harvey - 'Silence'

"Silence"

All those places
Where I recall the memories
That gripped me
And pinned me down

I go to these places
Intending to think
To think of nothing
No anticipate

And somehow expect
You'll find me there
That by some miracle
You'd be aware

I'd risen this morning
Determined to break
The spell of my longing
And not to think

I freed myself from my family
I freed myself from work
I freed myself
I freed myself
And remained alone

And in my thinking
Steal you away
Though you never wanted me
Anyway

Silence
Silence
Silence
Silence

(White Chalk)

-

Of course, the losses were necessary. It was all for the best.

Back from America, worn-off by its contradictions and lies, I came back to Europe and simply went through my first death.

Months of silence. Then mourning. New dawn. Renaissance. Rebirth.

-

Ten years later, so much has changed. I moved to England after that symbolic death, I later moved to Africa. I relived the journey of many of my ghosts. Made new friends. Learnt so much.

Yet, this year, I'm facing my relationship with silence again. maybe it is a spiraling process, a way the universe has to check if I've really learnt anything.

So much silence. Family members gone mute. Friends who simply turnt off. Work partners who cut off communication.

Well, I'll retreat into silence again if I must. I now know silence didn't kill me, other things did. And what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Time for a silent spring.

-

-

And then, we'll talk again, for sure. Maybe not these ones and I, maybe other people.
But just like there'll always be silence between the keynotes, in music, there will always be keynotes between the silences...

PJ HARVEY - 'Passionless, Pointless'

Lyrics:

Let's Talk
Let's talk
Let the dirt fall
Let Heads Roll
No kind hand is reaching out for me tonight
I slept facing the wall
I dreamt of buildings in pieces
You slept facing the wall
And you wanted less than I wanted
Passionless, Pointless.
Where does the passion go? I'm asking
There's no kindness in your hands
No reaching out for me tonight
You slept facing the wall
And you wanted less than I wanted
I slept facing the wall
But when I met you how did you enter?
I don't remember
How did we ever?

'In This Together'

“The farther I fall I’m beside you
As lost as I get I will find you
The deeper the wound I’m inside you
For ever and ever I’m a part of
You and me
We’re in this together now
We will make it through somehow
You and me
If the world should break in two
Until the very end of me
Until the very end of you
NIN – We’re in this together

Nine Inch Nails - 'We're In This Together'

Lyrics:

I've become impossible holding on to when
When everything seemed to matter more
The two of us
All used and beaten up
Watching fate as it flow down the path we
Have chose
You and me
We're in this together now
None of them can stop us now
We will make it through somehow
You and me
If the world should break in two
Until the very end of me
Until the very end of you
Awake to the sound as they peel apart the skin
They pick and they pull
Trying to get their fingers in
Well they've got to kill what we've found
Well they've got to hate what we fear
Well they've got to make it go away
Well they've got to make it disappear
The farther I fall I'm beside you
As lost as I get I will find you
The deeper the wound I'm inside you
For ever and ever I'm a part of
You and me
We're in this together now
None of them can stop us now
We will make it through somehow
You and me
If the world should break in two
Until the very end of me
Until the very end of you
All that we were is gone we have to hold on
All that we were is gone we have to hold on
When all our hope is gone we have to hold on
All that we were is gone but we can hold on
You and me
We're in this together now
None of them can stop us now
We will make it through somehow
You and me
Even after everything
You're the queen and I'm the king
Nothing else means anything
