2003 - 2023
It's hard for me to believe that the time has come to talk about 2003 as 20 years ago... Yet, here we are.
That year was deeply defining for my little career as a journalist.
In early spring, a group of students from my masters travelled to Northwestern University in the deep storm of the war in Iraq. Even the most democrat of these students supported Bush and Blair's war, while us, French students, were revolted and for once proud of our government, which refused to attack Saddam Hussein and his people.
In the autumn, I went to leave and work in Central Europe, reported in Prague and Berlin, volunteered at film festivals and wrote some of my first complex articles.
The sound of that extremely political, defining year, was really that album: '100th Window'.
At the time, I couldn't care less about who had produced it, who hadn't worked on it, and why it took so long to get it out after 'Mezzanine'.
It was futuristic, political, edgy, sharp, clever, so "on point", a fast-warding jump into the 21st century, the soundtrack of my nocturnal bus rides through a snowy Europe, and immensely beautiful. The reviews in France, which I couldn't care less about reading at the time (I had my own opinion), were extremely positive.
So, ... when I came to Bristol 12 years later... I was so surprised by the backstories and how detached the city was about that great record. For more, read the 10th chapter of my book, one of my favourite.

Montage du Group Show 'Projections' à Quai 36 (10/01/2023)
Production et Montage du Group Show 'Projections' le 10 janvier 2023 à l'espace d'exposition de Quai 36, maison de production d'art urbain, à Romainville (93), près de Paris 19e.
Cette exposition sera l'occasion de montrer le travail sur toile de trois artistes muralistes : Nelio, Zabala et Chazme, travaillant en France, Espagne et Pologne.

As most of you know, since 2015, my work as a journalist has evolved to combine my international experience (in Africa, the USA, Great Britain, the Middle East, etc.) with a reflection on major cultural issues (art and engagement, activism, multiculturalism, feminism, politics and social change, North/South relations, anti-colonialism, etc.).
I have been able to explore these questions by working with Velvet Film, by reporting for the German international broadcaster DW, and with my writing, especially as an author in residence at the Arnolfini International Art Center, in Bristol, but also at various festivals, through my cultural journalism, on BBC radio 4, and via podcasts.
Since 2020, I have been particularly interested in artists from the SWANA region (South West Asia & North Africa, where my family is from), and their relationship to Europe and the West, but also in the place of contemporary arts in reflections on some of the profound changes of our time. Since September 2012, I have been in contact with a few cultural centres and art galleries, on both sides of the Channel, in Bristol, London and Paris, and participated in my own way in the development of cultural projects, meetings, events, exhibitions.
I hope to be in England again soon, and to carry on working on projects that keep bringing us closer... On both sides of the English Channel, as much as from all sides of the Mediterranean.

L'équipe de la maison de production Quai 36 et la galerie Hatchikian sont ravies d'annoncer leur prochain "group show" : 'PROJECTIONS'.
Il s'agit d'une exposition collective unique, réunissant trois artistes venant de l'art urbain, de différentes régions d'Europe, Chazme, Nelio et Zabala, pour une collaboration exceptionnelle.
Conception par deux curatrices : Audrey Hatchikian et Julie Frydman croisent leurs regards de curatrices pour scénographier une exposition qui souligne la résonance des questionnements ouverts par ces trois artistes.

Hatchikian Gallery et la Maison de Production d’Art Quai 36 renouvellent leur collaboration artistique pour présenter “Projections”, Group Show réunissant trois artistes dont le travail alterne réalisations murales in situ et recherche picturale en atelier : Chazme, Nelio et Zabala.
L’exposition se tiendra du 12 janvier au 1er avril 2023 à l’Espace Quai 36 au sein de la Fondation Fiminco à Romainville, nouveau pôle culturel de l’Est parisien en pleine effervescence.
Audrey Hatchikian et Julie Frydman croisent leurs regards de curatrices pour scénographier une exposition qui souligne la résonance des questionnements ouverts par ces trois artistes.
Comment les contextualités des réalisations in situ en espaces urbains et des compositions sur toile en atelier se confrontent-elles dans l’élan créatif et les inspirations de Chazme, Nelio et Zabala ?
Comment ces artistes décloisonnent-ils les pratiques picturales et le paysage catégoriel des mouvements de l’art pour emmener le spectateur vers des horizons inédits, dépassant les oppositions entre figuration et abstraction, entre recherche formelle et propos narratif ?
Chacun, avec sa singularité esthétique, compose avec la mise en question contemporaine de la place de l’Homme et du devenir humain dans un monde désenchanté dont le sens semble se dissoudre. L’art porte une vitalité inépuisable : créer, c’est un désir de se rendre la vie possible.
Hatchikian Gallery et Quai 36 auront le plaisir d’inaugurer “Projections”, Group Show de Chazme, Nelio et Zabala, en accueillant le public pour un vernissage en présence des artistes le 12 janvier à l’Espace Quai 36.
Le dialogue entre les œuvres de ces trois artistes pourra ainsi s’ouvrir au regard singulier que chacun porte sur les nouages imperceptibles qui tissent entre leurs univers une conversation artistique inédite et enthousiasmante.

The artist is covering costs so ALL proceeds from this sale will go to fund supplies for our team in the conflict zone in Ukraine.
