"The Uniqueness Of Massive Attack": Book release for 2019

Hello people, while I'm touring England to perfect my book on Massive Attack, I have to announce that the publisher, the band and myself have decided to postpone the release to early 2019.

The good news is that we'll be able to add pictures in the book...

Stay tuned!

In the meantime, here is my little introduction, for Classic Album Sunday:

The Uniqueness Of Massive Attack – Melissa Chemam

Over the past four years, as a freelance journalist, I have been travelling between Bangui (Central African Republic), Paris, Istanbul, Calais, Erbil (Iraqi Kurdistan), the South of France and Ventimiglia in Italy, London and… Bristol. I have mostly been covering post-conflict issues and the refugee crisis for different European radio stations and magazines. So I went to Bristol to write about a brighter, engaging and inspirational story. To explore the culture of England’s West Country, retrace the history of my favourite music, a fascinating journey through an artistic and social explosion.

I decided to write about the band Massive Attack when I read they were travelling to Lebanon, in July 2014. They were about to perform at the Byblos International Festival and to visit Palestinian youth they help, in a refugee camp in Burj El Barajneh, in the southern suburbs of Beirut. I contacted a friend who is a writer and music journalist to convince him I could write a book about them…

I had always loved their music and I know all of their albums by heart. Their engagement suddenly seemed very authentic to me; it completely stands out in the current music business. I started to think of a way to reach out to them, especially to 3D, also known as Robert Del Naja, the heart and soul behind Massive Attack’s writing process and social involvement. After months of preparation and once he agreed to meet me, I packed my bag for Bristol in February 2015.

Listen: Massive Attack ‘Mezzanine’ Musical Lead-Up Playlist

I immediately liked the journey from London (where I had lived for two years) to the West country, the murals in Stokes Croft, the contrast between Saint Pauls and Clifton, the way art and music are present all around the city. I first stayed in Saint Pauls, walking everywhere, writing at the Watershed’s welcoming cafĂ© and helloing Banksy’s famous ‘Mild Mild West’ and naked ‘Well Hung Lover’.

After meeting with 3D, I contacted a snowballing list of Bristolians: some of 3D’s co-workers including sound-engineer and co-writer Neil Davidge, talented instrumentalists, rappers and vocalists like Mike Crawford, Sean Cook, Andy ‘Spaceland’ Jenks, Krissy Kriss, Mark Stewart and, six months later, Adrian Utley, Portishead’s guitarist.

I also spent a lot of time in venues and art galleries, in Bristol – spending a day with Inkie or listening to Roni Size at the Hamilton House. In London too, in Paris – where I interviewed Tricky and met Nick Walker, then in Dublin and further, to see Massive Attack on stage. All these meetings and events helped me recreating the key moments that made possible The Wild Bunch then Massive Attack and the scene that followed.

My book therefore retells the story of a rare group of unconventional and politically aware musicians and artists. The story starts with Massive Attack’s first album, the remarkable and inimitable Blue Lines, then goes back to their first influences. The Beatles, reggae, punk, soul music, hip-hop, Jean-Michel Basquiat and the graffiti stars of the film Wild Style. These include their very own hometown’s history, from the slave trade to recent riots… Then the book evolves until Massive Attack’s homecoming show in September 2016 and their coming projects.
It digs into the making of their groundbreaking albums, especially Mezzanine, which turns 20 year-old this year, described by many critics as the best thing that ever came from Bristol… It follows Massive Attack’s evolution as extraordinary performers, whose shows rival with the best acts in the world, and 3D’s artistic transformations, collaborating with Banksy, United Visual Artists and Adam Curtis. This very rich and fascinating path took them around the world, from Japan to America, Mexico and Turkey, Lebanon and the Congo…

Writing about them and about Bristol’s music and art scene, led me to write this parallel history of British culture, with underground origin, always pushing boundary and keeping an aware and open gaze on our fast-changing world.

Aretha Franklin

Saying a little prayer for her...

Aretha Franklin - I say a little prayer

Lyrics:

The moment I wake up Before I put on my makeup I say a little pray for you While combing my hair now, And wondering what dress to wear now, I say a little prayer for you Forever, and ever, you'll stay in my heart and I will love you Forever, and ever, we never will part Oh, how I love you Together, forever, that's how it must be To live without you Would only meen heartbreak for me. I run for the bus, dear, While riding I think of us, dear, I say a little prayer for you. At work I just take time And all through my coffee break-time, I say a little prayer for you. Forever, and ever, you'll stay in my heart and I will love you Forever, and ever we never will part Oh, how I'll love you Together, forever, that's how it must be To live without you Would only mean heartbreak for me. I say a little prayer for you I say a little prayer for you My darling believe me, ( beleive me) For me there is no one but you! Please love me too (answer his pray) And I'm in love with you (answer his pray) Answer my prayer now babe (answer his pray) Forever, and ever, you'll stay in my heart and I will love you Forever, and ever we never will part Oh, how I'll love you Together, forever, that's how it must be To live without you Would only mean heartbreak for me (oooooooooh)

Stronger In

I'm a strong believer in this. I'm a French citizen, but I've spent a lot of time in the United Kingdom. I've lived here, I've worked here and I love this country and its people. I truly think they'd be better off in the European Union, on all levels. So I strongly support this initiative:

13 August 2018

After nearly two years ghting for the rights of UK citizens in the EU after Brexit and working closely with EU citizens in the UK (the3million), the coalition British in Europe has to accept that the rights of UK citizens in the EU will only be protected fully if the UK remains in the EU.

British in Europe was set up to protect all UK citizens who had exercised their rights as EU citizens to live and work in another EU country. Nearly 80% of us are working age or younger and Brexit threatens our livelihoods and the lives we have built up with our families through hard work in other countries. The majority of us had no vote in the referendum.
We are all Europeans, children of the European project. We are British Citizens who have exercised our EU citizenship rights, with the full support of successive British Governments across many years. We have seized all the opportunities that EU citizenship and the fundamental freedoms have given us.

Until now, we have not campaigned to stop Brexit but to defend citizens’ rights. We were promised by both sides that our lives would remain the same as before. But our requests for meetings with Theresa May, the Brexit Secretary and the Home Secretary have gone unanswered.

If Brexit goes ahead, rights will be removed from us whatever the outcome of the negotiations:
  1. At worst, in a no deal scenario, we lose all our rights, and our legal status, and must hope that an emergency deal can be put in place to apply third-country national status to us, which is in no way equivalent to being an EU citizen.
  2. At best, the deal on citizens’ rights in the draft Withdrawal Agreement would con rm many of our rights but only in the countries where we live now. Even then, we would lose key rights such as free movement, the right to move, work and live in any EU country other than where we live now, and face huge uncertainty about the rights of the youngest members of our group – children and young people – in particular their residency and citizenship rights. Plus the UK has failed to guarantee our right to return to the UK and bring our family members without being subject to strict UK immigration laws.
So we have no choice now but to accept that the best solution to protect our rights is to remain in the EU. That is why we now support a People’s Vote, and we demand that the government deliver on its 2015 and 2017 manifesto commitments to give us back our vote so that we can nally have a say about our own lives.

Why British in Europe has to come o the fence

'Blue Lines' / "Blue Lines"

In the mood for...

Massive Attack - 'Blue Lines' - from Blue Lines (1991)

-

Coming up next week:

APRIL 1991. MASSIVE ATTACK release BLUE LINES:

The first masterpiece of what was only termed trip-hop much later, 'Blue Lines,' filtered American hip-hop through the lens of British club culture, a stylish, nocturnal sense of scene that encompassed music from rare groove to dub to dance.

For some members of this generation – music would never be the same again.
We are delighted to welcome to MELISSA CHEMAM from Paris, France to The CAT Club. Melissa is the author of the new biography of the band, ‘OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE’ (to be published before the end of the year).
The book is built around a long series of interviews with Robert Del Naja (known as 3D), other Massive Attack members as well as many other musicians and artists, who worked with Massive Attack or see them arise. These include Mark Stewart, Tricky, street artist Inkie, Neil Davidge, Sean Cook, and members of the bands Alpha and Portishead, among others.
Melissa is a French journalist and author who has worked for France 24, the BBC World Service and Radio France Internationale, as well as many magazines, and for the filmmaker Raoul Peck. Since 2003, she has been based in Prague, Paris, Miami, then in London, Nairobi and Bangui, travelling into more than 40 countries. And now she’s gonna be in Pontefract – can’t wait!

Massive Attack 2018 summer tour

Massive Attack published this statement today on their Instagram account, regarding their summer tour in this year 2018:

Firstly, a huge thank-you to everyone who came out to see us this summer.

We’d like to explain the two cancelled shows this summer.

Our guitarist Angelo was taken into hospital seriously ill whilst traveling to Les Argeles. We had no choice but to cancel the show. Luckily, our friend Alex was available to help out on guitar.

We hastily booked a rehearsal space in Valencia to get Alex up to speed so we could continue the tour and be ready for Mad Cool Festival. We got to Madrid confident and excited for the show.

To our total disappointment - as we prepared to go on in the specially arranged tent, the main stage kicked in with 98db registering on our meter. This was even before we put our In Ear Monitor systems in and turned on our mics for the first song. That level was now amplified much louder in our ears. It’s like trying to listen to two radio stations at full volume simultaneously. And trying to work out which bit is you.

We always want to attempt to deliver a good show and this would’ve made it impossible for us to do that. To walk away from all of those people in that tent was not easy. It was horrible and we felt like shit. Especially when we couldn’t communicate the situation with you all. It was the worst end to a crap week.

Yours truly,
Robert and Grant.

"I will make you hurt"

Song of the day:

Trent Reznor - 'Hurt' (Unplugged)

Album: "The Downward Spiral"
by Nine Inch Nails
(1994)

-

Lyrics:

"Hurt"

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

August 2: Happy birthday James Baldwin

Remembering James Baldwin
Born on August 2, 1924. Writers live forever... Thanks for everything, Jimmy.

From Velvet Film:

The great James Baldwin (James Arthur "Jimmy" Baldwin, August 2, 1924 – December 1, 1987) would have been 94 on this day.

We are all very grateful for his sharp mind, marvellous writing and extraordinary, inspiring life of struggles and just causes...

"I Am Not Your Negro" - Official Trailer

In his new film, director Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished - a radical narration about race in America, using the writer's original words. He draws upon James Baldwin's notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. to explore and bring a fresh and radical perspective to the current racial narrative in America. "One of the best movies you are likely to see this year." - Manohla Dargis, The New York Times http://www.IAmNotYourNegroFilm.com

'Kong' - Neneh Cherry

New song from a legend:

Neneh Cherry - 'Kong'

-

Message from the artist:

Neneh Cherry

So excited to finally share my new single 'Kong' with you ❤️❤️❤️  https://NenehCherry.lnk.to/kongFa
Directed by the inspiring & divinely talented
JENN NKIRU
Kong is an attempt at putting to words the ever growing disaster that is the displaced people of this world. The lyrics are trying to be personal and remembering the things that are easy to forget: the ordinary everyday lives, everyday loves, family, home left behind in deep pain trying to save life. Looking at the maps of Europe and the great West with all its promise of possibility....the lands that created all the misery in first place...
