ARTS, DUBAI AND AFRICA

Ah, I really wanted to be at the Dubai Art fair this year, as it presents a very special focus on African galleries and artists. Too short notice, I will focus on going to Art Dubai 2014 and in the meantime, follow for myself and others great moments from the fair, from Paris.

Voyage par procuration...

This article published this Sunday in the Huffington Post Arts pages is a good introduction:

For West African artists, a new leap beckons in Dubai

After a recent resurgence at home and gradual inroad into the art market of the west, contemporary art from West Africa tests the waters of the Middle East.

"INTERESTINGLY, the next testing ground for West African artists is the new blue-eyed boy of the 21st century’s business and leisure travel hub, Dubai. Under Marker, a sub-event of Art Dubai Fair, five artists via art advocacy organizations across West Africa will from March 20 to 23, 2013 at Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai be the focus of visitors. Art Dubai Fair has been rated as a major yearly international art gathering in the Middle East, with as much as 500 artists and 75 galleries from 32 countries participating every year, it attracts an estimated 22, 000 visitors"...

Artists and Shows Navigate Cultural Boundaries in U.A.E.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/14/arts/14iht-m14-dubai-arts.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

"DUBAI — The question of censorship looms large this month in the United Arab Emirates, a time when art and cultural events fill the calendar. In Dubai, early March was marked by a five-day literary festival, which will be followed mid-month by the annual art fair, Art Dubai. Next door, the Sharjah Biennial started on Wednesday.

The U.A.E. aspires to be an art and cultural center. While the federation of Gulf sheikdoms is relatively open and tolerant, its ruling establishments are concerned about the political turmoil in other Arab countries and are also wary of art containing graphic images or anything else that might offend conservative Gulf sensibilities".

About Art Dubai

Held under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai

Over the last six years, Art Dubai, the leading international art fair in the MENASA (Middle East/North Africa/South Asia), has become a cornerstone of the region’s booming contemporary art community. In 2012, Art Dubai welcomed 22,500 visitors – including 75 international museums groups – and hosted 75 galleries from 32 countries.

The seventh edition of Art Dubai takes place March 20-23, 2013, at Madinat Jumeirah. Besides the gallery halls, the fair's extensive programme will include commissioned projects and performances, artists' and curators' residencies, educational workshops, the unveiling of works by the winners of the annual The Abraaj Group Art Prize and the critically acclaimed Global Art Forum.

Art Dubai is part of Art Week, an umbrella initiative that highlights the plethora of exhibitions, projects and events that now coincide with the fair each March, the most dynamic time in the UAE’s cultural calendar. Special events include Design Days Dubai, the only fair in Asia dedicated to product and furniture design; Sikka, the fair run by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) and dedicated to new work by UAE-based artists; and Galleries Nights, featuring 40 new exhibitions across Al Quoz and the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC); plus other projects, museum shows and major events throughout the Emirates, Qatar and the Gulf.
