Rudolf Stingel
Palazzo Grassi présente l’exposition personnelle Rudolf Stingel, conçue par l’artiste lui-même en collaboration avec Elena Geuna. Le projet, pensé spécifiquement pour l’espace architectural de Palazzo Grassi, investit l’atrium et les deux étages du palais, se déployant ainsi sur plus de 5.000 mètres carrés. Pour la première fois, le musée met à la disposition d’un seul artiste la totalité de ses espaces, où sont présentées des œuvres inédites, des créations récentes ainsi qu’une grande installation site-specific. C’est aussi la plus importante exposition monographique consacrée à Rudolf Stingel en Europe.
L’exposition se compose de plus d’une trentaine de tableaux, certains réalisés dans les ateliers de l’artiste à Merano et New York spécifiquement pour ce projet, provenant de collections du monde entier, dont celles de l’artiste et de François Pinault. Elle s’étend le long des salles de Palazzo Grassi, recouvertes pour la première fois des murs au plancher d’un tapis imprimé de motifs orientaux.
Rudolf Stingel est un artiste italien du sud-Tyrol, qui vit et travaille à New York depuis 1987, tout en conservant des liens avec Merano, la ville où il nait en 1956. Le motif en relief de ces œuvres, commandées pour cette exposition à Palazzo Grassi, est celui d'un tapis persan. Stingel unit donc la verticalité de la toile avec l'horizontalité du tapis...

The 55th International Art Exhibition is open to the public from 1 June to 24 November 2013 at the Giardini, theArsenale, and in various venues around the city of Venice, titled The Encyclopedic Palace and curated by Massimiliano Gioni.

At the beginning of 2009, the Biennale has moved back to its historical headquarters at Ca’ Giustinian (San Marco), right after a significant restoration that lasted 3 years, realised thanks to special funding from the City of Venice and from the “Legge Speciale”, and partly financed by the Biennale itself.

These gardens in the east of Venice have been the traditional venue for the International Art Exhibition since 1895. They were laid out during the Napoleonic era, on land that had once been occupied by a district that included four churches and three convents. The area hosts theCentral Pavilion and a further 29 national pavilions, built at various periods by the participating countries themselves.
